Changing of the Gourd

October 10, 2010 Family, Fun 2 Comments

I really enjoy the changing of the seasons. It’s actually one of the things I miss about living in the Midwest. DISCLAIMER: Sorry Mom! Even though I miss “true seasons” and you and Dad and good barbecue in Kansas City, I’m not moving back. Having an altogether more moderate climate here makes this a much more desirable place for me to live.

And there’s the possibility of marijuana becoming legal in a matter of months.

But back to the seasons. Even though we had one of the coldest summers on record (counter to one of the hottest summers on record in the Midwest), we have had about 10 days of 80+ degree weather and I soaked in every ounce of warmth that I could. Now that it’s October, there is a chill in the air. The sun is shining a big smile, but the wind is giving us the cold shoulder. I live with a very simplistic (not simple) man. He likes things how he likes them, and he mostly likes them to be the same. He does not get caught up in frivolity. He does not care about seasons or holidays or whimsy. But he can’t hide my light under a bushel!! I don’t go all out, but I do like to spruce the place up with a few tasteful decorations to signify that Fall Is Here.

A few gourds for the mantel:

These metallic decorations were a “hand-me-up” from a friend and I just love them in this little nook!

I swapped out the boring tea lights in this wine barrel candle holder with my Halloween-themed candles:

I think these apothecary urns make a fun display — I’ve got tiny pumpkins, spiders and other creepy-crawlies, and CANDY in them!

I added a little “pumpkin tree bouquet” from Trader Joe’s for my desk (the vino is a standard accessory):

And I left a little surprise in the medicine cabinet for my curmudgeon to find during his get-ready-for-bed routine:

Welcome to Autumn! Tell me, do you decorate for the seasons, or am I still living a Midwest dream?

I love to see someone else getting int to the holiday spirit! The place looks great! I especially like the bathroom surprise for Greg – very scary!

Generally I like to decorate my abode with seasonal items. But alas, I must confess! My place does not yet have Fall accents, mostly because I’ve been holding onto summer for as long as possible!
